Can’t import table in TablePress

    Hi everyone!

    I’m trying to import a really large table into TablePress and it doesn’t seem to be working. I wrote to the Twitter team and they asked that I put more information here.

    I first tried importing an .xlsx file, and it didn’t work at all: it went immediately to an error page. Then I saved the file as a .csv file and tried uploading it that way. It seemed to load, in that the lower left corner of my browser said 2%, 5%, 20% uploaded, etc., all the way up to 90-something percent; but then it went to the error message page. I took a screenshot of the error message, but I’m not sure how to post it here. But it said:

    “This Page isn’t working”
    “culvercityecd.com is currently unable to handle this request.”
    “HTTP ERROR 500”

    Hm, could it be the website doesn’t have enough hosting space (or something) to handle such a big file? I notice that the .csv file (17mb) is about twice as large as the .xlsx file (9.4 mb), which makes no sense to me. Do I need to zip the file first or something? Did I convert it incorrectly?

    Thanks much for any help you can provide. I’ve never tried TablePress before, but I’m hoping it will let me put this huge, continually growing table on the website.

    Hi,

    thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.

    Ok, 17MB is a rather large table. Its size is then likely the cause for the import not working.

    Even if it would be imported, the table would be very slow (when being shown on the frontend of the “Edit” screen).

    As TablePress was not designed to be a full database management system, I can only recommend to check if you could use a real mySQL database table (and a custom PHP query script) for this large table.

    Thanks very much for your quick reply, Tobias. I appreciate it.

    I can try to make the file smaller, somehow, I suppose, but I imagine you’re right that it’ll be very slow on the front end, and that’s not good. I will try to look into a mySQL database table, though I’m not so good with code, so I’m not sure how to do that… If you have any suggestions or advice, recommendations on where to learn that, I would be very grateful. Thanks so much!

    Hi,

    unfortunately, I don’t have any direct examples right now, but there should be many programming tutorials for database access from PHP, in the context of WordPress.

    Hi,

    I am getting the same issue :

    This page isn’t working “website” is currently unable to handle this request.
    HTTP ERROR 500

    And my xlsx file is only 290kb by the way.

    Any reasons why it would show me this error?

    please try saving the file to a CSV file and try again with that.

    Hi,

    OK, just a small clarification though

    is it CSV (Comma-separated values) or CSV (DOS)?

    Hi,

    that shouldn’t really matter. TablePress is capable of recognizing several different delimiter characters.
