Try MANUALLY updating. When all else fails, download a fresh copy of the latest.zip file for this release (top right on this page) to your computer, and use that to copy up. You may need to delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folders on your server (NOTE: do not delete the wp-content directory or your wp-config.php file). Please read the Manual Update directions first.

BACKUP: If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. You can never have enough backups! See https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/article/wordpress-backups/

Thanks for your prompt response t-p.

I wonder whether it would be practical to reinstall the 5.6.2 version of wp initially instead of 5.7 (using the process at the ‘Manual Update’ link) and then updating to 5.7? If anything goes awry it might make it easier to diagnose the cause with less changes happening simultaneously (new version plus risk of me causing problems).

I do have a current back-up but it’s via the ‘AIO-wp-migration’ plug-in, so until I can acccess my site it’s unusable; hopefully it won’t be necessary though.

One of the steps (for manual update) is ‘deactivate plugins’. As I don’t have access to my dashboard will renaming the plugin folder be adequate?

Is there a way to put the site into maintenance mode from the cpanel while I do this?

Hi t-p. I summonsed courage to do the recommended manual backup and manual update and all went well but no change, ie fault persisted. Just found a post about the AIO wp-security plugin; many others had the same problem, now resolved with a plugin update. Now having the skill to turn plugins on and off from the cpanel I was able to get back in and update the plugin and all is now well.
