You should try to delete the folder from plugins directory and also delete the cache if you have a caching plugin.
It is strange because WPMM doesn’t use any hooks for login. Do you have a security plugin installed? Have you changed the login URL?

2. have you tried to rename the entire plugin directory?
I believe the problem wasn’t caused by maintenance mode because it has nothing to do with the login system. Also… I use it on WP 4.6 and Woocommerce and everything works fine.
