Can't put username in shortcode

I follow your instructions to authorize my account and that seems to work, although I do get an error message “There was an error checking your rate limit.” in the two columns next to the authorized accounts.
The problem is, in both the default settings for shortcodes and in the shortcodes settings in teh appearance -widget section I under username I get a drop down menu with nothing in it instead of a text box. So I cant actually put in my username!
