I have been reading other posts about this same problem. I have set up a database through cpanel with privileged user and password. When I attempt to run the install I get the following message

    ‘Can’t select database
We were able to connect to the database server (which means your username and password is okay) but not able to select the ratonsimpleseren_db database.

    Are you sure it exists?
Does the user ratonsimpleseren_laura have permission to use the ratonsimpleseren_db database?
On some systems the name of your database is prefixed with your username, so it would be like username_ratonsimpleseren_db. Could that be the problem?
If you don’t know how to set up a database you should contact your host. If all else fails you may find help at the WordPress Support Forums.

    Try again’

I have been following posts by member a22mu that sounds exactly like my problem, and that one is still not resolved. I have installed wordpress several times previously for other websites with no problem, so I know how to do it, but I can’t get this one to work. I know the database is set up, I have added a content table and entered data. The site is: http://www.raton-simpleserendipity.com The database name is [redacted]. the user is [readaced]. I can provide the password too if you need it. [moderator note: do not offer and do not provide this to anyone.] Please advise.

It sounds like either you have not created a database or your wp-config file is not set up correctly.

Look at the detailed install instructions here: http://codex.ww.wp.xz.cn/Installing_WordPress, especially steps 2 and 3.

I have set up the database already, and have done so many times previously on different websites, so I know that is not the problem. However, the database name now requires a prefix when creating it through cpanel. Before, in older versions of cpanel, I could create my own database name without a prefix. Could that be the problem, even though I am typing in the database name as it is shown on cpanel, and I have the user privelege.

    Try with prefix

Yes, and I have included the prefix, but it still does not work, and it won’t allow me to set up a database without it.

    – try contacting the hosting provider if the database server is online / if they have any other problem at their end, or they made any changes to your account, or if there are any limitations/restrictions, if the hosting package is set to Windows and not Linux, etc .

    – double check your wp-config.php file settings for the database name, database username and database password. This is where most errors occur.

-Then check that you don’t need to change the database host from “localhost” to something else. You can get that info from your hosting provider.

-Check you have actually created a database with the same database name as is in your wp-config.php file.
-Last, but not least, if all that information is correct your database probably has a problem with it, and you may need to contact your hosting provider.

Thank you. I will contact the provider. I think that may be where the problem is because the database name is correct, the password and username is correct, and the wp-config.php file settings are all correct. Must be with the server. Thanks, again!

most likely it’s a server issue
