In the analytics section bottom where it lists the Link Names and totals, how can a link have 1 total click and 10 unique clicks? And I see another with 1 total clicks and 2 unique clicks, and another with 7 total clicks and 17 unique clicks.

Basically how can there ever be more unique clicks than clicks? Unique clicks is a subset of Total Clicks.

Then on the same page I see a link that I know was sent to different people, but it says Total Clicks 14 and Unique Clicks 1. My point is, I know that link was used by different people so how does it only have 1 unique click.

I am trying to understand these analytics and in my thinking, its a straight-forward sum within the filter days where total clicks should reflect all clicks during that period and unique clicks should be the sum of the clicks by user. And unique must always be less than or equal to total.

    Thanks

By the way, I did first choose the Refresh stats before looking.

    Hi @flatword

Thanks for the detailed explanation—and yes, you’re absolutely right that unique clicks should never exceed total clicks. That kind of mismatch usually points to a data inconsistency, and we’d like to help get to the bottom of it.

    To help us troubleshoot:

    • Have you recently used any database cleaner or optimization tools?
    • Are you using any new caching plugins or services (or made changes to existing ones)?
    • Do you recall when this issue first started showing up—was it after a specific update or configuration change?

Also, just to be sure, please try clearing all levels of cache (server, site, object cache, and BetterLinks cache: how-to guide here) and then check if the stats realign.

Once we have that context, we’ll be better able to narrow down the cause—or step in from our side to investigate further.

    Thanks

    Pial,

As I did for the problem yesterday, I cleared SiteGround cache and the BetterLinks cache.

But unlike yesterday when that fixed the problem with not showing recent clicks, this problem remains.

I see a link that shows 1 total click in the last month and 23 unique clicks.

No I have not recently used any *database cleaner or optimization tools*.

I am not using *new caching plugins or services*.

The last time I recorded clicks was on 2/19/25 and there were none with more unique clicks than clicks.

So between then and now is when it happened

I am just noticiing that the probelm is not in the Manage apps where it shows 25 total and 8 unique for L&L Carpet.

For the analytics for the last month, it shows 1 total and 23 unique.

So how can it have 23 unique in the last month and 8 total unique in the Manage Links area?

    Hi @flatword

Thanks for confirming all that—and I really appreciate the detailed info.

You’re right, this is unusual. From what you’ve described, it sounds like the analytics data might not have been recorded correctly during that period. One possible cause could be caching interfering with the way header requests are passed to the database. If those requests don’t reach the server as expected, our system may miss or miscalculate clicks—especially when it comes to distinguishing between total and unique ones.

Unfortunately, if the data wasn’t captured properly at the time, there’s no way to retroactively fix it since it simply wasn’t logged.

That said, here’s what we recommend moving forward:

    • Clear all layers of cache weekly—this includes server cache, site cache, object cache, and the BetterLinks cache. It’s a good standard practice to avoid tracking inconsistencies.
    • In BetterLinks settings:
      • Make sure “Disable Bot Clicks” is enabled
      • And “Disable IP Addresses for Analytics” is not enabled
    • Optionally, you can clear the last 30 days of analytics data to start fresh.

Here’s a quick guide on how to do all that: https://d.pr/v/froBiv

Once that’s in place, please observe the stats going forward. It should help avoid issues like this from happening again.

Let me know how it goes

Thanks for those tips. I do have those 2 settings as you suggested.

As for clearing the click data from the Reset button, is there a reason that there are only 2 options and hard-coded as 30 days and 90 says? Why not also allow a custom range where start and end dates can be entered?
And if that can’t be done, maybe there could be something where you can clear more recent clicks? For example, when a BetterLink is defined, it’s common practice me to to test it a few different ways. I’d like to be able to clear that recent data data.

And I may as well ask, for the clearing of data, would it be possible to allow the selection of which BetterLinks to clear rather than having to clear all or none?

    Thanks!

    Hi @flatword

Great questions—and you’re right, more flexibility around clearing analytics would definitely be helpful.

At the moment, the Reset Click Data option only supports two fixed timeframes: 30 days and 90 days. There’s currently no way to define a custom date range, and unfortunately, it’s also not possible to selectively clear data for specific URLs through the UI.

That said, if you want to remove analytics for a particular BetterLink, the current workaround is to:

    1. Delete that specific Shortlink—this will also remove its associated analytics data.
    2. Recreate the link—this gives you a clean slate and new data going forward.

We know it’s not ideal, and we’ve shared similar feedback internally—so hopefully more granular control over analytics data will be something we can offer in future updates.

Hope this helps clarify things! Let me know if you’d like assistance with anything else.
