Can't update core from dashboard

Hello friends,

My site is currently running WP 3.8.1 and I can’t update it in admin dashboard. It just doesn’t find the new version, telling me I got the latest one, although I know the 3.9 is already out there.

After I had turned on WP_DEBUG in wp-config.php I got some messages like “WordPress could not establish a secure connection to ww.wp.xz.cn. Please contact your server administrator. in /var/www/html/sitename/wp-includes/update.php on line 407”

Yes, I can update manually but I’d like to set up the automatic updates.

I installed HTTPS tester plugin and got the following:

As far as I understand, everything is ok except #7.
[FAIL]: Verifying api.ww.wp.xz.cn resolves correctly. 66.155.40.202

But what does it mean? 66.155.40.202 is correctly resolved IP of ww.wp.xz.cn, then why did this test fail? Is this the reason WP didn’t find the updates?

I suspect it has something to do with outbound DNS requests of Apache web server, but don’t know how to make sure it is so.

Can anyone please explain?

Hi Casey!
Yes I’ve seen this article but it mainly dealt with question of how to block unwanted updates, and I want to do the opposite task.

I don’t see anything criminal in Apache logs, however I don’t know where I can see the outbound DNS requests that web server sends.

In the last 24-48 hours I’ve been experiencing similar issues with updating/downloading plugins through the admin. Wonder if its just an issue on their site.

I’m still stuck.
HTTPS tester reports failure because of the following line in its code:

$ip = gethostbyname( ‘api.ww.wp.xz.cn’ );
$expected = array( ‘66.155.40.250’, ‘66.155.40.249’ );
$ok = in_array( $ip, $expected);

and the current ip of api.ww.wp.xz.cn is 66.155.40.203, which is not in the list

However, when I try to update WP still can’t establish a secure connection to ww.wp.xz.cn.

Hope it doesn’t rely on IP addresses instead of a hostname (like the above mentioned plugin)

Temporarily solved the problem by switching api transport from curl to http-streams.

{
