• When I try to update WordPress from the admin panel, it just stops at:

    Downloading update from https://downloads.wp.xz.cn/release/wordpress-4.0.1-no-content.zip…

Is there a way I can get more debugging information to find out exactly why this is stopping?

I tried turning debugging on in the wp-config.php file, but that didn’t provide any extra information.

I checked the permissions on the files and folders on the account, and I don’t see anything out of the ordinary. But I am curious if there is a way to get more information on why this is stopping.

It could be a server issue but can you try some addtional basic troubleshooting? These are temporary steps and can be reversed right after.

    – Deactivate all of your plugins
    – Switch to the Twenty Fourteen theme
    – Clear your browser’s cache and cookies
    – Re-log in and try to update again

See if that lets you do the update.

Didn’t try this, but I logged in from 2 other computers, both of which had never logged into the WordPress admin panel, no change.

    No change.
