can't update plugins on remote host

When I click on “update” for one of my plugins, it the install fails but it takes forever. The loading graphic spins for a longtime and then if I hit refresh, I get a message saying the site is undergoing maintenance. That lasts for about 15 minutes or so.

Has anyone else run into this? Do you know what might be the cause? Thanks!
