What you are looking for is actually possible: Just download, install, and activate the TablePress Extension from https://tablepress.org/extensions/table-caption-html-tag/
This will then show the table name in the <caption> of the table.

That’s terrific! Now I’m wondering if I can prevent the Edit link from appearing in the caption. I realize it won’t appear to visitors who aren’t logged in, but I find it more a hindrance than a convenience as I work on the table design. Page preview doesn’t show what the page will actually look like, and even after it’s published, I need to log out, or open an “In Private” session, to see the page as visitors will see it.
