Hi @jetra ! You mentioned that the caption template for the Basic Thumbnail gallery is gone. I’m looking at my site here and the caption template is still available. See my screenshot here: http://screencast.com/t/IAIhfISnC45 … If you check the Add Gallery Window > select ‘basic thumbnail display’ > customize display settings > Template, do you see the same option as I am in the screenshot?
I’d love for you to confirm that. If you’re not seeing that, we’ll want to check that out.
Thanks @jetra!

I followed your link and that is exactly what I see. But when I use it, I get the error message
[Not a valid template]
All the legacy templates give me the error message. Only the “default” template works.
Thanks for your reply.

Thank you for replying back @jetra. It’s concerning to me that you are unable to use the captions template, and see that error instead. I wanted to make sure there wasn’t a conflict and if our caption template was working in the last update and in this current update (we released yesterday – please update if you haven’t already). Here are my settings: http://screencast.com/t/qNDBaNyDme and my results: http://screencast.com/t/iKAFBGwjnb7
Could you check once more with the latest update of NextGEN Gallery? If it’s still not working, please try temporarily switching your theme to WordPress default theme and all other plugins deactivated so only NextGEN Gallery is active. Perhaps there is a conflict causing it to not work for you. let me know how that works out. If it works, switch back to your theme and if all is well still, reactivate each of your other plugins until it no longer works, to find the culprit. Keep me posted 🙂

I very much appreciate your suggestions.
I deactivated all my plug-ins except nextGen, I changed to WordPress 2016 theme, I updated to latest NextGen version, even uninstalled and reinstalled nextGen.
Still getting [not a valid template] for all legacy templates. Default template works fine.
It seems there may be something about the “legacy” templates that can conflict with certain combinations of WordPress, Windows 10, php 7 and the like. Perhaps a new “captions” template, non-legacy would work with all configurations.
Thank you for your reply and all efforts to solve this issue.

Just installed a new wordpress site, using the WordPress 2016 theme. Then installed nextgen – a new install from ww.wp.xz.cn. No other plug-ins installed.
Still getting [not a valid template] for legacy templates.
So, it is not a theme or plug-in conflict.
I’m running the wamp64 server with php7 on windows 10.
Hope you can fix this

@jetra – Thanks for checking on all of that. 🙂 Hmm. I’d like for us to rule out if it is indeed PHP 7 causing the caption template to no longer work. Could you contact your hosting provider and have them roll you back to PHP 5.6. Please let me know if v5.6 does work better. If there is a conflict with PHP 7 & our legacy templates, we’ll definitely want to check that out.
Thanks @jetra!

Have an old computer running windows 7, php 5.4.16 on WaMP Server 2.4. Same exact problem. So, the problem isn’t php 7. Changing to WordPress theme 2015 did not help either.
I’m thinking something in the new NextGen gallery code is blocking the legacy templates, at least in some windows – wordpress – server configurations, like mine.

Runs fine on Bluehost server. Did one more test of NextGen – this time on Bluehost server – works well, no captions problem.
Looks like the problem was running the plug-in on a WAMP server. I’ve never had this issue before. Normally I test my websites locally (on the hard drive of my computer) using a WAMP server (local server set up on my harddrive – not on the Internet).
NextGen captions won’t run on a WAMP server but does run on BlueHost. Seems to require being live on the Internet.
Thank you for your efforts to troubleshoot this issue. Looks like the problem is solved for me.

Hey @jetra! Thank you so much for following up and letting us know what you’ve found. Good to hear you located the culprit of what was causing the templates to not work for you. We’ll check into WAMP and see if we can locate the cause and provide a fix if possible, in a future update. I’m really happy we’ve resolved this! 🙂 Given things are working well now for you on the live server, if you’re open to reconsidering your star rating in this review it would be very much appreciated. 🙂 If not, no worries.
Thanks @jetra!
