Capturing custom user input per product

I need to be able to allow the customer to add text to each product they buy, ie for adding user defined text to a t-shirt or cake.
I think there used to be a custom message field on the product edit page but this doesn’t seem to be there anymore.
Has anyone added this sort of customisation before?
Really quite stuck as I had this in the Ajax.functions.php but this has changed considerably and doesn’t seem to be handling custom user input.
