Carousel image height

I’m trying to make a carousel of ‘thumbnail’ images.
I have 2 problems with the carousel:

1) Sometimes the images are automatically resized for equal image height (= visually very desirable), but more often they are not. I can’t understand how to force this alignment to work. Three pages basically with the same code but different results re vertical alignment of the images:

https://ivcrotterdam2018.nl/recitals/ – cannot get the images to align, no matter what I try.

Any tricks you can share?

2) Putting two carousels below each other with no significant vertical spacing between them. This doesn’t work either – at least a full carousel’s worth of vertical space is forcibly inserted.
