Michael – I’m posting this here in case others have experienced the same.

Plug-in update failed for some reason and subsequently ASE was deleted from my plug-in list. I lost all ASE-formatted media from a year’s-worth of posts. Cannot reinstall package because “directory already exists.”

My bad for not backing up prior to updating plug-ins, but now I’m faced with rebuilding posts, which will consume weeks of my time.

What happened and how to repair, if possible?

Can you reactivate the plugin? Or did you have two versions of ASE installed?

Do you have FTP access at your host?

You can download a previous version of ASE here to see if that fixes things: https://github.com/bearded-avenger/aesop-core/releases

Re: 1.6.4: Do I download just the source code or both files?

You can download the zip file here: https://github.com/bearded-avenger/aesop-core/archive/1.6.4.zip.

    Then follow the instructions below:

    Uploading in WordPress Dashboard

    1. Navigate to ‘Add New’ in the Plugin dashboard
    2. Navigate to the ‘Upload’ area
    3. Select aesop-core.zip from your computer
    4. Click ‘Install Now’
    5. Activate the plugin in the Plugin dashboard

    Using FTP

    1. Download aesop-core.zip
    2. Extract the aesop-core directory to your computer
    3. Upload the aesop-core directory to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory
    4. Activate the plugin in the Plugin dashboard

It sounds like you already had a version of ASE installed that has its nown directory in /wp-content. If you can go in via FTP, delete that folder, and then redownload the plugin in the WordPress dashboard.

Reinstall 1.6.4: Partial success – thank goodness — but limited. The ASE-enhanced images and video have returned to the posts, but they have lost their formatting, and don’t even appear to be ASE-generated. For example, images that were once full-screen (such as those created using Parallax mode with movement toggled off) are now only as wide as the text. Non-ASE-photos require resizing and centering, etc.

    See here for example: http://sustainableplay.com/winter-of-his-disbelief/
(The second and third photos were full width of the screen. I’ve re-edited them in Parallax mode to no avail.)

Can you think of a workaround so I won’t have to re-insert all images from Media Library?

Can you delete ASE and then download 1.6.5 straight from the WordPress dashboard?

Have you chatted with the authors of Literatum and asked them if they have checked on their own test sites for any issues with ASE?

I’ve got two folders: aesop-core-1.6.4 and aesop-story-engine. Should I delete both, just one of the two – and if so, which one. I’ll backup first, of course.

Re: alerted the authors of Literatum? Not yet, but will do.

You can delete both and install direct from the WordPress dashboard.

Thanks, Michael – especially for maintaining your equanimity in the midst of my freak-out. πŸ™‚

I’ll backup, do as you suggest, and report back to the forum presently.

You bet. Sounds like a plan.

    Success.

Deleting the folders and re-installing 1.6.5 from the WP dashboard did the trick. The two posts referenced above have returned to their former glory, and I’m assuming the rest have as well.

    Many thanks!
