My post categories are empty. When editing or adding a post they are not displayed in the box. On the /wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category page none of the categories are displayed there either. If I attempt to add a category such as News which was previously there, I get the message, “A term with the name provided already exists with this parent.” I have verified that indeed the categories still exist in the wp_terms table.

Also, I reinstalled WordPress with no change.

Have you tried deactivating ALL plugins and switching to the default theme?

I just tried that, and the categories still did not appear.

    Site url?

That site is NOT using the default 2013 theme & has multiple active plugins.

Not currently, but I quickly made the switch to test it out, and in the admin area the categories were still not listed.

The posts that are marked as a category of “News” get scrolled across the top of the page. Everything was working fine for the last few years until yesterday for some reason. Currently the site is being actively visited for runners wanting their race results, so in the meantime perhaps I will just hard code the scroller, and then tonight I will be able to disable and plugins and change the theme to 2013 to debug more.

This issue has been resolved. It was an issue with the server. Running fsck repaired the issue and is well again. Thank you for all the suggestions offered.
