categories missing from imported database

    I have a strange issue and have not been able to find a solution. I’m cloning a WordPress 3.3.1 live site to my local server, and have imported the full database. Everything seems to import fine except there are no categories showing in admin (not even a default category) and all posts are uncategorized. Tags do import but none are mapped to posts. When I try to add new categories, it won’t let me and says “A term with the name provided already exists with this parent.” I’ve tried every bit of advice I can find on these forums, and I’ve tried using the built-in WordPress export/importer to no avail.

    If anyone has any ideas, I’d be very grateful.

    I might add this is also distressing because if we ever need to restore a site from a backed up database, would the same thing happen? Why would WordPress not recognize categories in an identical database?

    Update: This issue was resolved after I completely reinstalled my local server. I think it was permissions related.
