Thanks for contacting me here.
You can adjust that under Directory Admin->Manage Options, General tab. There are 3 slugs you can change: categories, tags, and listings. The main “Business Directory” part of the slug is changed by altering the page slug itself.

Sorry, I should have mentioned at the beginning that I already played around witht the slug settings.
When I enter nothing in tue categories slug, the category pages all return page not found error.

Yes, that’s correct–the slug must be a valid value, just like any page requires a valid slug. You can make it as short as 1 letter, but it must be something other than blank.
