Categories with different functionality?

    Hey guys,

    I’m creating a social innovation platform where the users are supposed to generate most of the content.

    So far it’s okay simple to make the users create posts on the site, but what if I want the each post category to have different functionality? E.g. I have created categories called “Event”, “Cause” and “Idea-jams”. While Idea-jams doesn’t require anything else than the existing blog-function, I would like people to be able to click a new button called “Participate” under Events – and “Support” under Causes.

    – Is it possible to give different attributes to each category, and where should I go to find out how?
    – Or should I make the users generate pages instead of posts?

    You need to start thinking about custom post types. When you start talking about different functions for different posts categories that is where custom post types come onto play. The starting point, if you are a programmer, is the Codex.

    If you are not a programmer, then plugins allowing you to create custom post types and age them are the answer. You may even consider looking for plugins that already handle the functions you are looking for and combine the with a powerful forms plugin like Gravity Forms or Formidable. There are some solutions that are free in the repository, and others available elsewhere that are premium, paid solutions.

    Your concept is complex and pushes WordPress well into CMS territory and really represents and nice, advanced use of it.

    Seems to be a little bit advanced, but I just have to learn it 🙂
