    Hi there,

We are having issues with a ‘category filter’. In our sidebar we have several filters, they all seem to work properly. Only the category filter does not appear on our Dutch site. We have a French and Dutch site (Polylang).

    See Dutch:

Now the French version (same page):

The category filter does not show up while our backend shows the same for both languages:

Is this a known issue? Could you please take a look at it?
    Thanks!

    Hi there!

Thanks you for explaining the situation so clearly.

This isn’t a known WooCommerce core issue, but when category filters behave differently per language, it’s very often related to how product categories are translated or assigned in multilingual setups like Polylang.

To assist you further, For testing purposes, could you please try the following:

    • Temporarily disable the multilingual plugin (Polylang).
    • Set the site’s default language to Dutch.
    • Then check whether the category filter appears and works correctly.

This test will help confirm whether the issue is related to how the categories are being translated or handled by the multilingual plugin for the Dutch language. You may can use the staging site for this test. you can use the following plugin to create a staging site: https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/wp-staging/

Once you’ve tested this, please let us know the outcome.

    Hi Shahzeen,

    Thanks for the quick reply.
We tried this already. The filter is not appearing once Polylang is deactivated (cache is cleared).

    Hi there!

Thank you for the update. I’ve set the site language to Dutch, added the product filter in the sidebar, and the category filter is appearing correctly on my end.

To assist you better, could you please share the exact steps to replicate the issue? Once we can reproduce it, we’ll be able to help you accordingly.

For testing purposes, please try the following:

    1. Deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce.
    2. Set the site language to Dutch.
    3. Share your site URL so we can try to replicate the issue on your site.

I recommend running this test on a staging site. You can use the following plugin to create a staging environment:
    https://ww.wp.xz.cn/plugins/wp-staging/

Also, I’d like to understand your site properly. Please share with us the necessary information below for us to investigate the issue further:

    • System Status Report which you can find via WooCommerce > Status

Please use https://pastebin.com/ or https://gist.github.com/ and share a link to that paste in reply here. Once we have more information, we’ll be able to assist you further.

Thanks. I understand you need more info, but this is too time consuming I’m afraid.
I was hoping it was a known issue. I will work around it by creating a different filter based on attributes.

    Hi there,

Thanks for letting us know I completely understand, and I appreciate you explaining your situation.

At the moment, this isn’t a known or widely reported issue on our side. That’s why we need the additional details and replication steps to investigate further. Without being able to reproduce the behavior, it’s unfortunately not something we can reliably diagnose or confirm as a bug.

Your workaround of creating a filter based on product attributes sounds like a reasonable approach for now, especially if it helps you move forward without further delays.

If you do decide to revisit this later and have the time to share the requested information or test on a staging site, we’ll be more than happy to take another look and assist you further.

Thanks for your understanding, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need help with anything else.

The issue was identified, by coincidence. The filter stopped working because of a permalink conflict. If a category slug had been used before — even years ago — then deleted and later reused, the filter would no longer function correctly. Changing the slug of the new or updated category resolves the issue.

So no multilingual issue, the slug did not exist prior on our French site. Therefore the filter worked over there.

    Hi @helpup,

Thank you for taking the time to come back and share what you discovered. That is a very helpful finding, and the explanation about the reused category slug causing the filter issue makes a lot of sense.

I appreciate you clarifying that this was not related to the multilingual setup itself, but instead tied to the permalink history and slug reuse. Your workaround and findings will definitely help others who may run into similar behavior in the future.

Thanks again for sharing the root cause and resolution here.
