challenges.cloudflare.com slow to load

Why does challenges.cloudflare.com assets load so slow and spaced out when running GTMetrix and Pingdom page loading? See the screenshot below as an example. With this plugin disabled, page loads in 1.4 sec. With plugin enabled, it takes ~4 sec.
