    Hello folks,

Was there a change in coding/format for the Related Posts functionality ? Empty space has started appearing under the header right below these sections on my site, and since it followed a Jetpack update there may be a link.

Frex on this page — [ redundant link removed ] — the Related Posts shortcode calls the “Related articles on Writeups.Org” section (about 80% of the way in). Then a big empty space appears in the next div, though the code of the posts hasn’t changed.

    Thanks.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi there,

Based on the changelog in https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/blob/d52a0f3d02feafedb5468bcb2eddfabaeb7381cf/changelog.txt, the last change made to Related Posts was in version 7.7 that came out on 3 September, but that had to do with how Related Posts work with AMP pages, and shouldn’t affect how they appear on the regular desktop view of your site.

I also don’t see anything like what you’re describing. Here’s how the Related Posts section at the link you specify look to me:

If you see something different, can you take a screenshot and use snipboard.io to share it here so we can see what you see on your end? And in case it’s relevant, what browser are you using?

If you’re speaking of the gap above the Game Stats heading, that’s not being caused by the Related Posts section, as the div containing Related Posts is closed even before the separator that appears between the two sections.

    Thanks !

The simple possibility now being ruled out, I’ll have to go a-digging.

The behaviour I see in Chrome, on the exact same page, changes when I simply reload.

Frex on one reload I have this — https://www.writeups.org/Large/Div-gap-worg.jpg — where you can see the Related Posts module at the top, the next div, an abnormal empty space, then the content. But If I reload I can have the empty space disappear, with the “Game stats” heading now overlapping with the table underneath — https://www.writeups.org/Large/Div-overlap-worg.jpg .

The only two recent plugin changes have been Jetpack and Redirection. From early tests I’m starting to suspect it may just be the copy of Chrome on one of my machines who started going gaga at more or less the time of these updates, rather than a WordPress issue.

Thanks for helping me get started with this small investigation !

If behavior changes simply on reload, it could be caching.

Are you using any sort of caching plugin, or do you see a “Clear/Purge Cache” button in your Dashboard or admin bar? If so, would you please try clearing the cache?

Note: You do not need to install a caching plugin at this point just to clear a cache you don’t have. If you don’t have a caching plugin or a way to clear a server-level cache, just say so. 🙂

Yeah, I cleared my various caches.

Some more digging (by which I mean trying stuff at random after @kokkieh said he couldn’t reproduce the issue) leads to the conclusion-for-now that it’s specific to an up-to-date Chrome with a 110% zoom (to rest my old eyes).

Behaviour is normal on Firefox, Edge and non-zoomed Chrome. But I can reproduce it semi-consistently on 110% zoomed Chromed, and 100% fix it by shifting back to 100% zoom.

    What a strange little curiosity.

Dang, forgot to tick the “fixed” box.

At this point it seems unlikely that there is any link to the Related Post functionality, so I should have ticked that box in my previous post, sorry.

Interesting. If I view your post in Chrome and zoom in the Related Posts section is still fine, but the Game Stats section gets completely messed up, with either a big gap appearing below the heading, or content shifting up so it actually appears behind the heading instead of below it.

I also notice it doesn’t happen the moment I zoom, but only if I reload the page after zooming in.

I wonder if it might not be your theme not playing along well with Chrome – that’s another possibility you can look into.
