change the directory "uploads"

I’d like to change the directory “uploads” of the plugin. How can I do? I’ve changed several lines of code in the files “db.php” (714, 719 and 749) and “setup.php” (line 252). I’ve created a new subdirectory in “wp-content” directory with permisions but the archives continue uploading into “uploads” directory.
I want to protect this new subdirectory with .htaccess to keep on privacy of candidates.
Can you help me please?
