I am using the Responsive Theme, 4.2.2 version of WP,and I made a child version of Responsive in case any updates to the theme might cause problems. (Or in case I made changes to the theme that I might later need to undo since I’m not sure what I’m doing.) I want to change the background color of my theme and possibly even change the theme itself, but when I select customize (or even background) while in the WP admin dashboard, the little circle comes up and rotates as though it’s loading, but it never loads. I let it spin for 30 minutes and it still never loaded. Suggestions please?

What plugins are you using? Are you by any chance using CloudFlare? Also have you tried clearing your browser cache and maybe even doing aggressive server caching?

Also check your console for JS errors seeing as the customizer is very JS dependent.

I’m not using CloudFlare. My plugins are:
    Akismet
    Disable Comments
    Facebook Conversion Pixel
    Google Analytics Dashboard for WP
    Google XML Sitemap
    Jetpack by WordPress.com
    Mail Subscribe List
    Recently Updated Pages
    Responsive Add On
    SEO Friendly Images
    Social Media Feather
    Theme Junkie Custom CSS
Ultimate Photo Widget for Flickr, Tumblr, and Pinterest

I have completely cleared my browser history and have tried using a different browser with cleared cache. I don’t know how to do aggressive server catching.

Matthew, how do I check for JS errors?

I read the instructions on debugging scrips but step one is to open wp-config.php . I don’t know how to get there. I tried http://www.mywebsite.com/wp-config.php and http://www.mywebsite.com/wp-admin/config.php but obviously those didn’t work. I’m sorry to ask what must seem like an obvious question, but how do I get to the wp-config.php page so I can try the debugging option?

I haven’t tried the server caching yet … going to try that now.

You need to go into your backend, cpanel, or FTP.
