In the existing plugin, you can override that string by creating a custom language file. This is great because it allows you to customize the language everywhere: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/customizing/customizing-labels-messages-and-urls/

I agree that that particular string should be easier to change, so will look at adding an option, but that won’t help you in the short term.
