Change URL for lightbox

Is it possible to change the page URL for each enlarged image in lightbox?

Currently we visit a page http://www.domain.com/article and clicking on the thumbnail to enlarge, the lightbox comes into action but the URL remains the same (www.domain.com/article).

It would be possible, when using lightbox, to add something like # photo1, # photo2, etc. For example, clicking the thumbnail to zoom in, lightbox kicks in, and the page URL changes to something like this: http://www.domain.com/article#photo1 or http://www.domain.com/article#nameoffileimage

Today 60% of visits come from smartphones and people are accustomed to using the “back button” to close the zoomed image. With this, they usually end up inadvertently leaving the page.
