• Hi all,

I’ve searched the forum and googled the net, but can’t seem to find an answer. I’m sure someone who knows his or hers MySQL and networking issues can answer this.
I’ve been hosting my blog at web10.nu. The offer one gig of space, but are very restrictive in changing the amount offered between web and database. So now I’m stuck on 25MB db, and 925MB for web. The db-limit is approaching, and because of this I thought that I would host my own database server, and leave the wp-files itself at web10.nu.
I believe I’ve managed to set up Apache, MySQL and php – at least I can reach phpmyadmin here at home from a remote host.
However, when I change the wp-config.php (which resides at web10.nu) to point at my external IP at home, I get the usual error from wp regarding username/password/database server and so on. NO connection can be made.
Where exactly do I start looking?

  • Usually a host isn’t going to let you use a database server that isn’t their own.

You might consider looking for a new host arrangement.

OK, I verified that with my host, and they say that I can do it if I want, obviously it shouldn’be a technical issue on their side. Which leads me back to my original question:

Changing the address in the wp-config.php doesn’t help, do you think I need to change the DNS address at my host?

Then I’d guess you need to have that database in some kind of reachable domain (or IP address). You wouldn’t change your existing domain, as you would want that to stay with web10.nu.
