Changing expiry date

Hi, I did post this a while back but worked around it by changing the format of memberships. However now I need to reinstate the facility to change a user account field so that I can add a three year expiration date. When I try and manually change a user account to expire three years from the initial reg date I get an error pop-pup saying invalid date. Any way around this?
