Changing URLs

Can anyone provide assistance for how to change URLs so that they reflect the webpage name, and are not randomly assigned? I have tried installing and activating a plug-in and using the “Custom URLs” feature in the “Permalink” tab, but this made all the webpages unreadable by the web-broswer.

Any assistance? I would be eternally grateful!
