I have had developers create custom themes in the past…

Been doing some online training pushing child themes…. What is your experience and thoughts on this???

    thanks!

Child Themes are easier to support.

    E.g.
The Child Theme is Blank Slate. Blank Slate is available on ww.wp.xz.cn: http://ww.wp.xz.cn/themes/blankslate . Ask for help with your Child Theme and you can easily identify to us what you’ve changed, and we can look at the parent theme for anything else. We can then replicate the problem.

A child theme is used to modify a theme. While you could edit the theme’s files directly, those changes would be lost if the theme was updated in the future. Using a child theme protects your changes.

In the case of someone having a developer create a custom theme specifically for them, making a child theme probably isn’t necessary, as presumably the client and developer would be in contact with each other and the developer could simply incorporate any changes the client wishes to make.

If you just rename a theme… will it ask to be updated? I think it’s connected to the name right?
