child themes

please can someone explain child themes.
Before my new theme my website was developed by a designer so i don’t think i had a child theme so all new to me, i had one theme and all i did was add content.
i have a website and have installed new theme and they recommend getting a child theme which they have sent to me in a zip. i understand that it is for any customisations.
when i have uploaded the child theme zip file which theme do i work in regarding content and everyday workings?
I am not a developer so will be using the theme as it is and just adding logo, changing colours and changing sample content and adding new content. the parent theme is where the updates happen but do i use the parent or work on the child theme?

Hi @handmadegb, There isn’t a typical file that you work under for everyday workings. We generally ask you to post for help in your parent theme’s support section on the ww.wp.xz.cn forums, but I’m not sure whether you’re using a commercial theme. Do you now which parent theme you’re using?
