    Hello,

I have a WordPress site that needs a good clean. So I’ve decided to fresh install and use a new theme I’ve developed (I’m having a few issues on the existing site but none on the test site).

What steps do I need to take to ensure the content, users and media are all backed up and restored correctly?

Would the following work or is it more involved?

    1. Backup DB.
    2. Backup Site (tar).
    3. Delete WP files and folders via FTP.
    4. Unzip WP zip file, upload via FTP.
    5. Copy over previous /plugins and /uploads
    6. Install new theme.
    7. Drink tea.

  • 4a. Import old database backup into new database.

I’d also suggest switching over to Twenty Eleven before carrying out the db backup to make life a little easier – since you’ll be using a new theme anyway.

So an export and import of the DB is definitely required? Even if I’m only FTPing up the new WP files and not actually running the install?

Oh – sorry. Are you just going to re-connect to the old database?

Yes and it’s all sorted now. I took a clone of the server and tried it out 🙂
