• I have a site that has been running W3 Total Cache for a couple of years and when I went to back up the files to prepare for a move I found HUGE numbers of cache folders and files and it was taking forever plus having problems with filenames.

So, I went into the admin and used both the Purge All Caches and Empty All Caches but I still have an incredibly large number of files. I was surprised because shouldn’t this command delete them all?

My problem is I want to back up the website and then upload it to a new host. And I want to start with a completely clean, empty cache.

    1) can I somehow delete all these files?
    2) is there a better way to clear files?
    3) can I simply avoid copying the cache folder?

If none of these will work I guess I’ll just remove the plugin completely as explained here https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/w3-total-cache-questions-answered/#uninstall or here https://www.webnots.com/how-to-completely-delete-w3-total-cache-plugin/

But I would prefer to simply back up and restore my site without the hassle of deleting the W3 Total Cache plugin if possible.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

    Hello,
You can avoid copying the entire cache directory as it will be built automatically on the new environment. I think your old cache files not being deleted, which happens more often, and could be prevented when using a memory-based cache.

You can just copy wp-content/w3tc-config/master.php file to the new environment you won’t have to uninstall/install the plugin.
