Client with 900 Sites

I am currently in negotiations with a client who needs the community of WordPress – Multisite – Buddypress with a single instance of WordPress on an AWS instance of whatever size and power. In other words “one big community”.

My question is this: There will be minimal usage but…still…can a single instance of WP handle this without major collisions? And…it may double, over time.
