• I was reading the codex page on child themes, since I have made some modifications to an existing theme but recently discovered the existence and utility of child themes.

Under “Creating a Child Theme from a Modified Existing Theme” the second instructions is

Create a child theme from the Parent/Child Tab, but do not activate it yet. Make sure you check the “Copy Parent Theme Menus, Widgets and other Options” box.

However, I have no such tab in the wordpress dashboard, I am aware of plugins to creata child themes but none of these are referenced on that page, and I would rather use a built in function if one exists.

I am able to follow the instructions for manually creating a child theme, but am confused if I am missing something for what should be a much easier method!

    Hi there!

Yes, that is a little confusing. I think part of the reason is that whoever wrote that out was using a plugin to facilitate the creation of a child theme. You can always edit that if you want. You can use your dotorg username and password to login.

Ok thank you, I must admit that until I logged in there I was unaware the codex is user editable at all, or that there is a discussion page which might have been a more appropriate location for this question!

No worries. I wasn’t aware it was editable at first either. 🙂

The discussion page isn’t used as much though I don’t think.
