You have installed akismet, badbehavior and spamkarma2 – are they activated? You shouldn’t get hundreds of spams.
I am trying to activate akismet but I don’t have an API key. Supposedly I received one, but it’s nowhere to be found. Can I have it re-sent. As tss writes, I also get tired of opening comments and it’s stuffed with raunchy spam.
I don’t wnat to require registration. I’ve noticed some other blogs, like typepad, offer a graphically distorted text that the commenter must retype before the comment is accepted. Does wordpress offer this?
The “graphically distorted text” – aka captcha – is useless. The only thing they do: annoy the real commenters but they don’t stop the trackback spam, and most likely what you get trackback spam.

No, nobody sends it. Read the link above again. You have to create an account on wordpress.COM and get it from there.
If you went to wordpress.com and got an API key, all you have to do is log into your account at wordpress.com. The API key is in your profile over there.
