• I moderate all incoming comments, this bot also got moderated, and always ended up on trash. I just wanted to know what kind of comment bot is this, and where is this comes from. For the last two months, every time I publish a new post, in a less than a minute, that comment bot is already on my trash on that new post.

The bot pick some part of the sentence from the paragraph that I posted (new or old), and make it their comment.

    something like this
[...]this sentence is part of the paragraph[...]

Always using those “[…]” on their comment.

Does anyone have had this comment bot before ? And I want to know where is this comes from.

I already installed reCaptcha V3, but still that bot comment always appear.

I can tell you it is the result of trackback or pingback spam. You’d need to check your access logs to get more information like its IP address(es). A single IP is easy to block, but many spammers use a widely distributed bot net for spamming, so are difficult to block by IP. If you are willing to disable pingbacks and trackbacks, that will solve the problem.

Be sure it is really spam and not another legitimate blogger noting your posts, the real purpose of track and pingbacks 🙂

Thank you for the reply. I spent several hours yesterday figuring out what was the culprit because I’m curious. The last two months I just ignore it knowing that those “comments” always ended up on trash.

Turns out, it’s just my rookie mistake. The recaptcha v3 was not integrated correctly. Since then, those comments not appearing anymore. I tested out, writing two very short new posts, publish it, and no spam comments on trash.

But I still keep my eyes on it, to know whether that’s just coincidence or not.

I hope you’re right but I’m not so sure. Pingback spam does not use the comment form, so recaptcha would be ineffective AFAIK. Something that actually checks commenter data like Akismet would be more effective IMO.

I hope I was right too. The weird thing is that before I’m using recaptcha, Akismet had already there in the first place.

I just finished writing another post, no comments on trash anymore, it’s working now I guess, but I’m not 100% sure.

It could be the bothersome spammer has simply moved on. They do that sometimes. In any case, you are not being bothered any more and that’s enough cause for celebration no matter the reason.
