Apparently this was not theme related just a newbie mistake. The disabling works on future posts, not old ones. Still think that it should be clearly written on the settings page that it will only work on future posts.

The new-article-only dynamic is what the settings page refers to when it says (emphasis added):
Allow people to post comments on new articles
(These settings may be overridden for individual articles.)
If you’d like, you can recommend a way to reword that option to make it more clear, by submitting a ticket, here:

Be sure to set the Type to Enhancement 🙂

I want to disable all commenting on my blog posts. I have unchecked the appropriate boxes in Settings -> Discussion. Yet the comment box is still visible under the posts. How do I get rid of it?
