I am in the process of developing a site that will launch next week. I noticed several nights ago that there is no place for a reader to put comments, after individual posts or any other type of page view. I do not know how long the problem has been there. It might have been there since I first installed the site. After days of searching every forum and trying everything suggested, nothing has changed. Here are the details:

The theme is Twenty Seventeen. I have switched to others and still no comments. I’ve reinstalled it.
I am on the current version of WordPress and all plugins.
I have activated all the proper switches in Settings–Discussions.
I have JetPack activated and have set the right switches, turned the off, disabled Jetpack, tried at all again. No change.
I have tried multiple times to deactivate every plugin. No change.
I have done no custom programming. There is no child theme and no alterations to the existing theme.
I have run a Health Check and done everything it recommended. No change.
    I have tried different browsers.
I have momentarily launched the site to see if it changed anything. No.
The computer has been rebooted multiple times.
I have manually turned on and off comments at the post and page level.
    Nothing has changed.

What else can I possibly do? I appreciate any and all counsel.

    Thank you.

  • @donnacoxbaker are you sure you did not shut it off at the page/post level? Check the discussion on the individual post.

Yes, absolutely sure, but I did something seemingly unrelated just after I posted this last night, and the comment field started to show up. It was in the general Settings–Discussion…the field labeled:

    Comment must be manually approved.

    It’s the only thing I changed. ?

    Thanks for your help,
    Donna

@donnacoxbaker if actually showing comments themselves then yes, that would be a problem. Each comments entered would be held in moderation until you approved them. If the form to enter the comments are missing, that is not related. Now, if you look at the page while you are logged in, then the comment form will be missing since your already logged in. All it would show would be textarea for you to enter your comment.

The full standard comment form with name, email etc is shown for people who are NOT logged in. Its best to check on another browser than the one that you are logged into the admin with.
