re: It won’t let me leave the ‘surname’ box empty (which I’ve not had to use before, as this isn’t relevant for my listings)
The last name has always been required, however, this requirement wasn’t properly enforced. Late last year this was corrected as the last name is truly needed now.
Looking at your site, you are not adding individuals, so, when adding an entry… simply change the Entry Type to Organization first since that better fits your usage of Connections.
re: when I fill this in and select ‘add entry’ it then leads to a blank white page with the text ‘access denied’.
My best guess… is that you upgraded from a fairly old version of Connections. In the past there have been others where the database upgrades did not properly execute which caused similar issues when adding/editing an entry. I’ve never been able to duplicate this but I can fix it. If you open a ticket in our support forum, I can help you further from there.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for your reply. I’ve used the ‘Organization’ option instead and that seems to be working.
However, when I added a new shop to my directory (called Flock) it has added it to the end of the list rather than including in alphabetical order: http://www.vintagebrighton.com/vintage-shop-directory/
Please could you let me know how to solve this?
Many thanks,
Jo
Hi again,
I think I’ve solved this by reverting to adding the shop as ‘individual’ and adding this order code to my page:
[connections category=3 order_by=first_name]
I figured that because I’d added this shop as an organization rather than individual it wasn’t ordering it in the same list as the other shops (which are all listed as individuals)? Is this correct? If so, would you recommend changing all of the shops to be listed as organizations? In this case what should I change the order code to? So order_by=?
Many thanks,
Jo

The sorting will really depend on how you were entering your data as individuals, even though they were Organizations…
Sorting when mixing Individuals and Organizations has been taken into account. An Organization will be sorted in line with the the Last Name of an Individual. As an example, say you have two Individuals where one’s last name begins with an “A” and the other begins with a “C”. When you add an Organization that begins with a “B”, it will be ordered between the “A” and “C”.
So, that said, if it is sorting to the the end of the list, my guess is that you were only entering first names. Correct?
Is there an order_by option you can use to force the sort order you want?, Sorry, but no, because the first names and organization name are stored in separate columns in the database so one will always come before another with the way your data has been input.
The real fix would be edit your old entries, copying the name from the first name field, switching the entry type to Organization and then pasting the name back in and saving it. Looking at the number of entries in your directory, this would only take about 15 minutes (ish).
Hope that helps!
Hi Steve,
Very helpful thank you. I’ve now changed all the entries in my shop and events directories to be ‘organizations’.
This has lost the chronological ordering of the events, however – despite using the code ‘order_by=birthday’ on the events page: http://www.vintagebrighton.com/vintage-events/
Do you have any advice to rectify this?
Many thanks,
Jo

I’m not aware of any issues when ordering by birthday, not saying one might not exist…
I looked at the page, the dates are not shown so it is impossible for me to discern what the order is compared to what it should be.
If you post a new support ticket here, I’ll be able to help you resolve it.
Thanks,
How do I register so I can post a ticket?
Many thanks,
Jo
