    Hi everyone,

I’d really appreciate some help with this, as I’m currently tearing my hair out trying to find the issue. I’ll separate my post into bullet points whilst trying to describe the issue, to try and make it easier to digest. Apologies in advance, it’s gonna be a long one.

    • I created a landing page for my company’s Case Studies, found at https://watcherr.com/case-studies
    • I used the ‘Portfolio’ functionality within WordPress to create my first case study. When editing the portfolio item, somehow I got the permalink for this to appear as “https://watcherr.com/case-studies/wivina-senior-residence” – where the “case-studies” part of the URL in the permalink section was not even editable from the project itself. I could only edit the slug if that makes sense
    • I did not create any project categories
    • I linked to ‘Portfolio’ on my Case Studies landing page, and the actual project was visible on https://watcherr.com/case-studies
    • Even though the portfolio item itself is editable and I can preview the page without any issues when I’m editing it, trying to visit the actual link after publishing (https://watcherr.com/case-studies/wivina-senior-residence) resulted in a 404 error, no matter which browser I tried to access it from, even in private mode
    • Since all my blog posts work just fine and without any 404 errors, I went ahead and deleted the case study ‘Portfolio’, and created it from scratch as a ‘Post’
    • I created a new post category called ‘Case Studies’, with the slug ‘case-studies’, and assigned this to my new post
    • I ensured that my Case Studies landing page is now pulling the data from the new post category, instead of pointing to the old [now deleted] portfolio item
    • When I edit the post, the permalink shown is the same as before (https://watcherr.com/case-studies/wivina-senior-residence) but when I try to view the published post, I am still getting this 404 error.
    • I’ve cleared the website’s cache, cleared my browsers’ caches, all to no avail
    • I’ve checked my Redirects plugin, there’s nothing there in regards to Case Studies or case-studies
    • I tried the ‘301 Redirects’ plugin, as it allowed me to enter the URL of the post, and to redirect it to the actual post (using its ID I assume, it’s instead of a URL (hope this makes sense). Doing this resulted in a different type of error than the usual 404 – this time, it told me the page could not be loaded because too many redirects were taking place
    • I deleted the redirect and now it’s showing me a 404 error again
    • Just for fun, I tried changing the slug of the post category from “case-studies” to “case–studies”
    • Doing so, I was finally able to view the post – no 404 error!
    • However, I really need the URL to say “case-studies”, so I changed the slug back. Now I’m getting the 404 error again *sigh*

So…. the last 5 points above make me think it’s a redirect issue but there are no redirects… I’m so confused.

Thank you for reading all the way to the end. Any help would be much, much, much appreciated!

There is no “project” functionality in WP core. Are you doing this through Jetpack? If so, I recommend asking at https://ww.wp.xz.cn/support/plugin/jetpack/#new-post so the plugin’s developers and support community can help you with this.

@sterndata Hi Steven, sorry that’s my mistake, I meant ‘Portfolio’, not ‘Project’ – I’ll edit my post to reflect this

    Same difference. 🙂

Which plugin provides portfolio? I think that’s Jetpack, too.

@sterndata Not Jetpack, but thank you for mentioning this. Because I remembered that Portfolio is built into the theme I’m using (“Salient”). And there is a setting that allows me to set a custom slug for the portfolio, which was of course set as “case-studies”.

So, I removed this, refreshed the permalinks, and it seems to be working just fine now!

    Thank you again
