I have found a NEW bug in backwpup with in both Version 4.1.7 and the latest V5 on wordpress 6.9.

I found this error 18th Jan. I cannot say when it started as I have been ill for quite a while so haven’t been on my admin panel for a few weeks, but I have been using the app for years now with no issues until 17th Jan.

I have been using backwpup for years and had no issues. Nothing has changed with my site, but suddenly this error started happening out of the blue one day.

Happens in v4.1.7 which I use AND the latest V5
(II use v4 as I don’t like v5 and it doesn’t work on my site/server anyway)

I get a popup error saying “an error occurred. Please try again” when I am on any page within wp-admin.

This error happens constantly as I navigate around wp-admin. Every single page load = the error. Only in wp-admin.

When I disable the plugin, this error goes away.

When I enable the plug in, I get this error every single time I navigate in wp-admin. Any link I click, I get this error.

I found this error was caused by backwpup by disabling all plugins and reenabling one by one. 100% is only happening with backwpup enabled.

I have uninstalled the plugin fully and deleted all traces of it and tried again but I still get this error.

    Tried on V4 and V5.

I have now disabled the plugin for now as I can’t use my admin panel with it enabled due to this error appearing constantly, every single click you make in the admin panel.

Obviously I don’t know if my web host changed some setting that could cause this, or what, but it happens 100% of the time in the admin panel.

Any idea what this could be or what I should check for?

As a unrelated side note just in case I am asked why I am using V4 still:
This error happens in both v 4.1.7 and v5 anyway so its irrelevant BUT just In case you want to know why I won’t use to v5, it doesn’t work on my site/server. Nothing happens when I start a backup on V5 no matter how long I leave it. Tried backing up to my server and to things like Dropbox but it doesn’t work Tried many times on various versions of v5 since you launched it, and it just never backs up. So I won’t be upgrading. But as I said, this error is on both versions anyway.

    Hi @ukheather,

    Thanks for the details.

When an error popup appears on every action in the admin area and goes away only after deactivating BackWPUp, it usually means one of the plugin’s admin-side requests is failing and getting blocked by the server or a security layer.

    This can happen due to:

    • A firewall, WAF, or ModSecurity rule blocking AJAX or REST requests
    • A security plugin interfering with admin requests
    • A recent server-side change by the host

To help narrow this down, could you please:

    • Open your browser’s developer tools and share any errors you see in the Console
    • Temporarily disable any security or firewall plugins and check if the issue persists
    • Check Tools > Site Health for any REST API, loopback, or scheduled event warnings
    • Open this URL (while logged in as admin) and share the output after hiding sensitive info: your-domain.tld/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=backwpup_debug_info only in the new UI. In the old version, you can check this information from the settings page.

Once we understand what’s blocking the requests, we can address that first. After everything is sorted, I’ll be happy to help you migrate to the new UI if you’d like.
