Contact Form Blacklist?
-
Hi Marc,
Please read the plugin documentation completely…This feature is already included in the plugin as of version 1.5.4. If you enable the Enhanced Comment Blacklist, any email address you enter into the box will be blocked from using either the contact form or the comments. The user receives a message that they have been blocked according to the site owner’s blacklist settings. For full info on how this works, please follow the link.
Take care and have a great holiday.
– Scott
That is great Scott, many thanks. I can see you are very thorough as always. I should have read the documentation more carefully first. Sorry. Thanks again. Happy holidays.
By the way, I assume anything added to the blacklist isn’t case sensitive?
I just did a test Scott. I enabled the enhanced blacklist, then I added the word “nike” to the list. Then I sent a message via the contact form as a test and included the work “Nike” in the contact form. The message came through and was not blocked. Nor did I receive any message on the screen when I used the contact form saying I am blacklisted. Did I perhaps do something wrong?
You’re very welcome. No worries.
Correct, the blacklist isn’t case sensitive.
Lol, the only thing you did wrong with your test is not read the documentation yet. 🙂 It covers all that. This will answer your question…From the documentation (linked above):
Because comments and contact forms work a bit differently, in the contact forms only the email address and IP address are checked against the blacklist. In comment submissions, the comment content, comment name, URL, e-mail address, and IP address will all be checked.
I’ll refer you back to the documentation for full details on how it works. Hope that helps.
Yes Scott, very sorry, I did miss that. In that case can we wildcard domain names to blacklist in order to block email addresses from the entire domain name? For example *abc.com
By the way, I just did some tests with the contact form and for some reason it is sending each contact mail twice. I am receiving each contact mail in duplicate. Oh well, no worries. The delete key works 🙂
Enhanced Comment Blacklist documentation:
Similarly, in the new blacklist function, email addresses have to be a complete, valid email address (like
) and must be an exact match to the email address of the submitter.Regarding the multiple copies of the emails, it’s definitely not supposed to do that. I’ve even put in a fix to prevent it from happening (compatibility fix to address conflicts with other plugins, so I will want to look into that. If you can do me a favor and read this first: Known Issues and Plugin Conflicts – see item 1. If that does not fix it, please submit a support request through the WP-SpamShield Support page as it will require more detailed info for me to look into it.
Thank you Scott. Perhaps it is an issue with Jetpack as noted in your Known Issues section. But some of the other issues you mention about comments with Jetpack and and WP-SpamShield don’t seem to be a problem on my site. Just the double contact email.
You’re very welcome. Yes, the JP dev team reached out to me a while back and we started a conversation on how to bridge things between the two plugins. We have each coded (limited) workarounds into the plugins until a true fix can be found. Hopefully the issues are at least minimized now.
Sounds good. By the way, I don’t think the error of the double contact email started happening (from memory) until the latest release of WP-SpamShield.
By the way. not to sound critical, but I think the way this message is worded isn’t a great idea.
Your message has been blocked based on the website owner's blacklist settings. If you feel this is in error, please contact the site owner by some other method.
I would prefer the person not to know they have been blacklisted as the above message may only encourage them to try and figure out a way to circumvent it.
I have some ideas on what to write instead. I think I will try and edit the code and put in my own custom error message.
Happy new year Scott!!!
I just did Scott, thank you. Hopefully you received the message. The support page didn’t give confirmation of the receipt of the message so not sure if it went through or not?
Got it. Just emailed you back. 🙂

Hey Scott – Would it be possible to add an Email blacklist box as well for the contact form?
If so, it would also be great if they got a message on the screen too after trying to send a contact message that they are not permitted to send contact messages to this web site.
Cheers,
Marc
