If you look on the back-end, do you have any comments recorded?
If by the back-end you mean the dashboard, yes comments appear there in the comments section.
The comment should have a link to the post on which it was made.
But I’ve made no posts to my site.
The site is a fairly simple 1-page, http://snakeoilwillie.com. Comments show up in response to a ‘contact’ page/post. There should be no ‘contact’ page or post, but if you enter the address snakeoilwillie.com/contact/, you get somewhere I don’t understand. I am using a Contact Form 7 plugin on the site — I don’t know if that has anything to do with it.

Well, it seems that you do have post with the slug contact — it doesn’t 404.
How do I get rid of it? It doesn’t show up in my dashboard’s list of posts; in fact, there are none.
It might be part of your theme.

I frequently get emails advising “A new comment on the post “contact” is waiting for your approval”. Where are these comments coming from? My website has neither a post nor a page named /contact/. How do I turn this off?”
