Help, my Public html folder says it is 2GB in size according to my host. my media file has 2,775 items in it between 2kb-104kb each. I need to find what the worst offenders are.

I started my blog back in 2011 and have almost 374 published articles and another 75 in draft. I’ve been using the Performance lab plugin to create WebP images for their high quality and reduced size.

But I just noticed this past fall that it doesn’t delete out all the jpegs when it is done converting them to WebPs. So now I have both and I’m guessing the other side of the coin is that WordPress uses the jpegs to create thumbnails and odd-sized jpegs for display elsewhere on my site.

The problem is as a Photographer I use my blog and the pictures to tell stories about the fall colors in New England and I don’t have just one image in an article I usually have 2-5 in every article. So that means I probably have 1,200 unique images in my media folder.

I have gone through the file manager page by page and I can’t find an image greater in size than 125kb and if my math is close to correct, that means my media folder would/should be +/-150MB plus extra for the miscellaneous jpegs. So let’s say 250MB, that is still well under the 2GB that the content folder is topping out it…

All I can see is my public html folder is 2 GB but the the host tech says its the content folder. I’ve tried digging down in all the subsequent folders to find something that is really bloated but I haven’t found it yet…

    Any ideas?

  • It seems your host uses cPanel.

Unless your host has completely botched the cPanel software and removed every useful feature, you should find a “Disk Usage” feature in your cPanel which should let you know what files/folders are using the most space on your account.

This “Disk Usage” gives a complete disk usage report, and includes the space used by MySQL databases and any Email accounts you may have.

Well it does say my public html folder is 2 GB but there is no way to drill down to see what is causing this bloat. The Hostgator techs says it’s my content folder but I don’t see anything that would indicate a reaso the folder is (public html folder) it 2 GB. I’ve estimated the content image folder is between 150-250MB. My database is around 150MB as well. But nothing I see would obviously cause my public html folder to be this size.

I’ve run malware scans and have decent security so if a malicious player got in I’m not aware of it.

I just need more granular info of all the folders. I keep going in and looking at file manager but my biggest file is about 1.3mb that I found so far…

There should be, though it’s rather non-intuitive.

Scroll down the page, and click on the > arrows (not the folder names!) to expand the folder, as shown below. You also want to select the option to sort by disk usage.

That helps, thanks. My upload folder is 1745.91MB which is 1.7GB and there in lies the problem. Even though I have limited my images to 135k to 175k, its still to damn big… I think I’ll close this and open a new one for photographers who have photo blogs and how they keep the size down…
