• Hi Folks.
Several months ago, I installed a Cookie Consent plugin. It worked fine, but within a few days, I noticed that my google ratings went into the cellar. I went to the google search console and tested a few of my pages and every single one was broken on mobile and could not be crawled. So I quickly uninstalled the plugin, re-submitted every page for indexing and things slowly recovered.
Fast forward to today, I thought I would try it again. I installed a different (one of the two most popular) consent plugins and configured it. This time, I immediately went to the google search console and tested a page – BROKEN on mobile again! Uninstall the plugin and google can successfully crawl again.
So, I’m curious which consent plugin are people using that is known to play nice with the google crawler? I really don’t care which one I use. I just don’t want it to clobber me on google!

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Which plugin(s) specifically are you describing?

    I use this one,

and have not noticed the behaviour you describe.

Hi @corrinarusso. Interesting because that’s exactly the one I just tried. Google search console could not crawl my pages on mobile if it was enabled. Looking at the site on a mobile device, it seemed to look ok with the consent form popping up, but google sure didn’t like it.

    Hm.

    Are you saying you can:

    1. run GSC and get no errors
    2. then install this plugin, and run GSC and get errors,
    3. and then uninstall this plugin and run GSC and get no errors
    4. ?

Can you fix the 404s on the font’s on your site and try again?

Did you go through all the docs they have?

It’s not that I don’t believe this is happening in your case, but I do wonder if there is some other kind of conflict on your site. It’s a *very* popular plugin, with extremely good ratings from other 1000 people,

So I would expect if this was a bigger issue more people would notice.

With that said, post your concern in their support form to get more specific support:

It could also be a conflict between the Consent Plugin and your theme. However, you should be able to see this when you open the page in the developer tools. You don’t have a Consent Plugin activated at the moment. Could you activate the plugin you want for this so that we can see what exactly happens there?

@corrinarusso Yes, exactly… Test Live Site on google – no issues. Enable the plugin. Test Live Site on google fails. Disable – all is good again.

Sure I can look at the Font 404s but they are the same with and without the plugin. I appreciate you trying to help. Thank you. I realize the plugin is very popular. I figured 700K installs so it CAN’T have that problem – yet for me it does.

Thanks for your help. I’m sure it must be some conflict with something on my site since it is such a popular plugin. It certainly would not be so if it clobbered everyone on google like happens to me. I don’t have time to go on a troubleshooting safari on this at the moment. At some point, I’ll light it up again and capture the errors a little more systematically. I was hoping it was a known issue with a common solution. Thanks again
