I’m using MS Word as a pasteboard for events to be posted. I see on WordPress there’s a button “Paste from Word” where you can paste into its pop-up window which preserves Word’s formatting. I don’t want to preserve the formatting so have been pasting directly into New Event. It occurred to me I’d better ask to be sure, there’s nothing inherent in doing that, that will add a lot of “weight” to my events, resulting in slower loading for visitors to the website is there? (Obviously I know zilch about such things, so just checkin. I’m entering a LOT of events and would hate to have to go back and redo them all if this is a bad way to go for some reason.)

Great! Glad I asked. Thanks much.

It’s not a great idea to paste directly into WordPress from Word – it often causes layout problems. I believe this will be fixed when WordPress 3.9 is released next month (when the Paste from Word button will also be removed).

Until then, it’s a good idea to paste into a basic text editor like Notepad – to remove all the formatting – before pasting into WordPress.-

Ouch. Okay, do you mean layout problems that I can see? It hasn’t caused any problem so far at all. At least so far as I can see. Or do you mean some sort of creepy crawly layout issue that I can’t see but that’ll sneak up to bite me in some way.

maybe you can try to disable WP visual editor and just use the Text editor instead; I believe there are wp plugins that can do this.

As I said, I’m not having any problem copy/pasting directly into the main text window. It’s not retaining text colors it had in Word but that’s just fine, I’d just as soon it not. The only reason I asked was because I’m going to be likely having 100+ events at any one time, so I just wanted to be sure that by pasting directly into the main window itself (and bypassing the “paste from Word” radio button), I wasn’t adding some sort of weird coding issue that would look okay now but in the background somewhere, start muddying up waters somewhere. (This might have been an overly cautious type question but stranger things have happened when you’re on unfamiliar territory).

“This might have been an overly cautious type question but stranger things have happened when you’re on unfamiliar territory)” Exactly 🙂

Sometimes you get weird characters or spaces that don’t immediately show up when pasting straight from Word. As Angelo says, using the Text Editor is another good option.
