• First of all, I want to say that I love the Wordfence Security plugin. It’s awesome. I have tried others but this is the best I have used.

Next, Recently I have added Wordfence Security to a couple of my websites I have on another hosting account and I have noticed a drastic increase in CPU load/usage percentage.

I was wondering which settings I can change to decrease the CPU usage?

Will increasing the “Update interval in seconds” from the default of 2 to a higher number help much?

What other settings can I adjust/change that will help to lower the CPU usage?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • That will. Change it to 8 and see if that reduces the load. Also do not leave live traffic on. I use it when I am looking at it and disable it when I am not. You might also make sure debugging and high sensitivity modes are not on.

Thanks Tim, I’ll give that a try and see what happens.

I appreciate your help with this matter.

Great support is another reason why Wordfence is the best security plugin. 🙂

Thanks! We appreciate the kind words.

    You are most welcome.

The changes were made that were discussed above and they did make a nice and noticeable change in the CPU load. Over the last several hours there is a good decrease in the CPU load which in turn has also helped speed up my site load times.

    One last question,

Will altering the setting for “How much memory should Wordfence request when scanning” have any affect at all on CPU usage? I didn’t know if increasing or decreasing would have any kind of affect on the CPU loads.

Thanks again for your great help and suggestions.

No. What that does is different. PHP has a set amount of memory that is available to it. Its set in php.ini. Sometimes you can request more in wp-config.php, etc. This basically requests that php allow us to get more memory for the scans, etc. I have mine always set at 256m but rarely do I see my usage go above 90m.

Thanks for the help Tim, your assistance is greatly appreciated.

As for the Twitter shoutout, I just wanted to help spread the word about Wordfence and how great the support is that is given to it’s user. Many Plugin Authors don’t have great support like you have given me. I just want people to know that great support is just 1 more reson to use Wordfence.

    Thanks again.
