Every time I try to update the app it crashes my site and gives a DOCTYPE error I have to delete the plugin in SFTP and add it fresh.

I just tried to download fresh and got this error.

Installation failed: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//IETF//DTD HTML 2.0//EN”> 500 Internal Server Error Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Can you confirm the following?

Does your server meet the plugin’s system requirements?

Is your WordPress version updated to the 4.9.8? When you update, does the issue resolve?

Does reinstalling the Yoast SEO plugin manually resolve the issue?

Have you tried performing a conflict check? Try updating the plugin while all other plugins are deactivated.

So despite the plugin throwing an error with a fresh install, It appeared in the list after I did some caching. I was able to activate the plugin, but as I said the problem seems to arrive when I update. Because of the latest version, I can’t run the troubleshooting for plugin conflicts.

@jamonkey We understand if you are unable to perform a conflict check, however we aren’t able to determine whether the issue is the result of a conflict with another plugin if one if not performed. If you are experiencing an issue with updating the plugin in the standard fashion as a workaround, you can also perform a manual update of the plugin. We have instructions on how to upgrade the plugin manually at the following link: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-can-i-update-my-free-plugin/#ftp. You will need an FTP program such as FileZilla and your FTP details, which can be obtained from your host provider.
