create a registration/login section without using the wordpress standard.

I am making a website for a company and i am trying to figure out what i could do/use to create a registration/login section without using the wordpress standard registration and login system. I need to create this so that others are able to access the blog section. With the registration section, i need to be able to add in other questions that the person registering would have to answer. I’ve been looking at plugins but there are too many and im starting to get confused with it all.
