I would like to stop the creation of image backups, but the option can’t be changed. All images are resized and optimized before uploading, the gallery plugin simply has to upload and display – there is no need for any backup. Plus, the backup files double the space usage. This is unbearable in a small hosting account. I have to clean up after every upload.

What could cause the option to be unchangeable? Is it a “Pro” thing? It’s extremely hard on those who can’t afford more expensive hosting.

@materathemad – The “backups” option can be found under Gallery > Other Options > Image Options … setting it to “No” should stop backups from being created.

    Thanks!

Please read my post before assuming that I don’t know what I’m doing. I said the option can’t be changed. That means, when I click on “No” NOTHING HAPPENS. It will not change.

@materathemad – I was just insuring you were looking at the correct option. As this is not something we have any other reports for I suspect it would something specific to your site and likely a conflict that is happening and/or something that is affecting the NextGEN Gallery options from being saved and/or read from the database.

Please try our external Reset Tool plugin here: https://bitbucket.org/photocrati/nextgen-gallery-reset/get/default.zip

To install and activate, go to Plugins > Add New … Upload Plugin
To use, go to Tools > NextGEN Gallery Reset

We do not offer specific support for the Reset Tool plugin as is but it can help in many circumstances, please let us know if it does.

    Thanks!

Okay, thanks. I thought it was probably site-specific, but wondered if there was some common cause/solution. I’ll try the reset, and post results. Xfingers.

Thing is, it’s not my site. The owner is a busy fellow who wants a lot of pics but has little experience with maintenance (or with WP and its plugins, lol). I had to do some major byte-pruning last week, after he maxed out. That’s when I found out I couldn’t turn off the backups. 0.0 It just seems weird that one option is unchangeable. Everything else is working fine.

WOOHOOOOO!It worked. There was one glitchy moment afterwards when I tried to go to Gallery Settings and got a “don’t have permissions” message, but I tried “Other Options” and was in. Now it’s all fine.

What a relief. Those backups are a monster buttpain. It’s too bad there isn’t a handier way to get rid of them. I can see where they might sometimes be useful. Godnose too many people don’t keep good backups on their own and don’t know enough about image editing. But…well, it’s over. Thanks again for the help.

I have a similar problem. I want to disable the backup images as well, but I cannot change the back-up option in the gallery/other options screen. The yes/no radio buttons are there but are being overwritten by the corresponding text. Therefore the buttons cannot be changed by mouse click. (i tested this with MS Edge, Chrome and Firefox browsers, with all the same display/selection issue)

I have executed the above reset procedure, but this did not change the the back-up option from yes to no. I presume the back-up YEs is the default since all other settings changed back to the default setting.

Right, you still have to change that manually. The reset script should have made that possible now.

I haven’t seen the overlapping text thing, but I suspect it could be due to the theme you are using, especially since you tried multiple browsers. Try temporarily changing your theme.

    Thanks for your reply!

The script as activated at tools/nextgen gallery reset only resets to defaults. I have no other other options there.

I have also changed to basic theme Twenty Ten and twenty Sixteen. In both cases the radio buttons are overwritten by the test of the line above.

    Any other idea’s?

Okay, I think I have a better clue. Try zooming the page larger and smaller (Ctrl +, Ctrl -) I do see some overlap when I zoom text size up, but when it’s almost too small for me to read, there’s no overlap. I guess I’m so used to this kind of annoyance I hardly think about it. Most people are okay with frackin 6-pixel fonts, and like to design things that make my eyes hurt 🙁

    Thanks!

I changed the language from NL to US which gave smaller text and the made the view as small as possible (I already tried making the view bigger without result). Then i could change the setting!

    Thanks again!

@knouws – I would have suggested a possible translation related issue, I’ll have to look further into that problem as the text should not obscure any buttons (although we do have a new UI coming out soon where this will not be an issue and as such may defer “fixing” this problem until after the new UI release).

@materathemad – Thanks for the assist in your topic 🙂
